IT IS THE TURN OF IKOLE EKITI TO SHINE ON THE SENATORIAL CORRIDOR
The question of fairness, justice, and equitable representation has once again taken center stage in the politics of Ekiti North Senatorial District. At the heart of this debate lies a simple but powerful argument: the need for balance in the distribution of political power among the constituent local governments.
For over a decade now, Ido/Osi Local Government has maintained a dominant presence in the Senate. This reality is not speculative—it is backed by clear political history. Distinguished Senator Olubunmi Adetunbi held the senatorial seat for eight uninterrupted years, followed by the current senator, Cyril Fasuyi, who has now served for four years. Altogether, this brings Ido/Osi’s hold on the Senate seat to a total of twelve years.
While no one denies the constitutional right of any qualified individual to contest for office, the principle of fairness demands a broader view—one that considers inclusivity, rotation, and the long-term stability of the district’s political structure.
Ekiti North is not made up of Ido/Osi alone. Other local governments, particularly Oye and Ikole, are equally significant stakeholders in the district’s political and developmental landscape. Yet, when examined critically, a clear imbalance emerges.
Oye Local Government has had limited representation, with Ayo Arise serving just four years in the Senate. Ikole Local Government, on the other hand, has never produced a senator in the current democratic dispensation. This stark disparity raises important questions about equity and inclusion.
How can a district truly claim unity when opportunities are concentrated in one area while others remain marginalized?
The agitation by concerned youths across Ekiti North is therefore not misplaced. It is a call rooted in justice, fairness, and a desire for political balance. Their position is clear: after twelve consecutive years of senatorial leadership from Ido/Osi, it is only right and just that the seat rotates to other parts of the district—specifically Oye or Ikole Local Governments.
This is not merely about politics; it is about representation, belonging, and trust in the democratic process. When power circulates fairly, it strengthens unity and fosters a sense of inclusion among all communities. Conversely, when it is perceived to be monopolized, it breeds discontent, apathy, and division.
Ikole, in particular, stands out in this conversation. Despite its size, population, and contributions to the district, it has yet to produce a senator. Granting Ikole the opportunity to lead at the senatorial level would not only correct a long-standing imbalance but also reinforce the principles of fairness and equal opportunity.
Oye, though it has had a taste of representation, still remains underrepresented compared to Ido/Osi. Allowing either Oye or Ikole to produce the next senator would therefore be a step in the right direction—one that aligns with democratic ethics and the unwritten but widely respected principle of political rotation.
The demand by Concerned Ekiti North Youths is not a call for exclusion but for inclusion. It is not about denying Ido/Osi its rights, but about ensuring that other local governments are not perpetually sidelined.
As the next electoral cycle approaches, political leaders, stakeholders, and party structures must take this argument seriously. Equity should not just be preached—it must be practiced.
For Ekiti North to move forward as a united and progressive district, justice must prevail over dominance, and fairness must triumph over convenience.
The time has come for a new chapter—one where Oye or Ikole Local Government is given the opportunity to represent the people of Ekiti North in the Senate.
Only then can the district truly claim to stand for justice, equality, and collective progress.
