A CALL FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND BETTER REPRESENTATION
As the 2027 general elections approach, the people of Ekiti North Senatorial District—comprising Ikole, Oye, Ido/Osi, Moba, and Ilejemeje Local Government Areas—have a solemn duty to assess the performance of their current representative, Senator Cyril Oluwole Fasuyi, who has served since 2023. After more than three years in office, the verdict from many constituents, including youth groups, student unions, and community voices, is clear: his representation has fallen far short of expectations. The district deserves a senator who delivers tangible results, not one whose tenure is increasingly viewed as underwhelming and disconnected from the grassroots. Here are the compelling reasons why Ekiti North should reject Senator Fasuyi’s bid for re-election.
2. 1. *LACK OF PERFORMANCE*
Senator Fasuyi’s time in the Senate has been marked by a glaring absence of measurable impact. While sponsoring bills is part of a legislator’s basic duty, many of these remain in early stages with little to no direct benefit for the people of Ekiti North. Critics point out that governance cannot be reduced to activity in Abuja while the home front suffers. There is no evidence of strategic influence used to attract federal projects, investments, or transformative interventions to the district. Instead, the narrative emerging from communities is one of unfulfilled potential—a “learning period” that has yielded no visible progress. As one public commentary aptly noted, constituents are left asking whether this first term will end with “nothing to point to.” Performance is not measured by promises or photo opportunities; it is measured by results. On this score, Senator Fasuyi has not measured up.
2. LACK OF INFRASTRUCTURE
Infrastructure development is the bedrock of any meaningful representation, yet Ekiti North continues to grapple with deplorable roads, erratic power supply, and inadequate access to clean water. Farmers, traders, students, and residents endure daily hardships because of poor transportation networks that hinder economic activities. Many communities still lack basic amenities such as functional boreholes and reliable electricity. No major infrastructural projects—be it road construction, water schemes, or power improvements—have been credibly linked to the senator’s influence. Solar streetlights or minor interventions, where claimed, fall woefully short of the scale required for a senatorial district. Three years on, the absence of concrete, verifiable constituency projects in the federal budget or on the ground speaks volumes. How can a senator justify re-election when the basic infrastructure that should ease the lives of his people remains neglected?
3. LACK OF YOUTH EMPLOYMENT AND EMPOWERMENT
Ekiti North’s youth, who form the backbone of the district’s future, are burdened by rampant unemployment and economic hardship. In an era of national challenges, constituents expected their senator to champion large-scale empowerment programs—skills acquisition, mentorship, funding for startups, or attraction of investments that create sustainable jobs. Instead, there have been no consistent or impactful initiatives. Occasional handouts, token gestures, or one-off distributions do not constitute empowerment; they are mere palliatives that fail to address the root of youth idleness and disillusionment. Student unions have publicly expressed disappointment, noting that even promised support for education and livelihoods has not materialized into action. Without deliberate efforts to tackle unemployment and build capacity, the district’s young people remain trapped in a cycle of unfulfilled potential. A senator who cannot prioritize youth employment has no claim to their votes.
5. 4. LACK OF YOUTH AND LEADERS’ ENGAGEMENT IN HIS REPRESENTATION
True representation demands constant dialogue, consultation, and partnership with the people—especially the youth and community leaders who are the heartbeat of the district. Yet, many in Ekiti North feel abandoned and unengaged. The Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU) and Ekiti North Local Government Students Union Presidents have jointly highlighted how lists of students were requested for empowerment that never materialized, months after the promise. Youth leaders and broader stakeholders report a lack of structured engagement, with no sustained platforms for input into legislative priorities or district needs. Students, in particular, lament being mobilized during campaigns only to be sidelined afterward. This disconnect breeds apathy and erodes trust. A representative who fails to engage his constituents meaningfully cannot claim to speak for them.
The time for excuses is over. Ekiti North has waited long enough. The district’s challenges—poor infrastructure, youth unemployment, and leadership disconnect—require urgent, results-oriented representation, not recycled promises or business-as-usual politics. Rejecting Senator Cyril Fasuyi is not about sentiment or “bad belle”; it is about demanding accountability and opening the door for a fresh, committed leader who will prioritize the people’s needs.
Ekiti North deserves better. In 2027, the people must choose performance over personality, delivery over rhetoric, and genuine engagement over tokenism. The rejection of Senator Fasuyi’s re-election bid is a necessary step toward a brighter, more prosperous future for the senatorial district. The power lies with the voters—let them use it wisely.
