STRENGTHENING LIVESTOCK HEALTH: EKITI ROLLS OUT 80,500 VACCINE DOSES TO BOOST FOOD SECURITY

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, has announced that the state received 80,500 vaccine doses through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.

According to him, the vaccines include 50,000 doses for Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), 30,000 doses for Newcastle Disease, and 500 doses for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

Boluwade described the vaccination campaign as a significant step forward in strengthening livestock health management, noting that it will help curb disease outbreaks and boost productivity. He also urged livestock farmers to cooperate fully with inoculation teams to ensure a successful exercise.

He further revealed that 35 inoculators have been engaged for the exercise 25 from government veterinary services and 10 from private organisations to guarantee wider coverage and efficient service delivery.

In his remarks, the State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Olayinka Adedipe, stated that the initiative aligns with the project’s goal of improving animal health systems and enhancing the resilience of livestock farmers. He emphasized that collaboration between public and private inoculators will ensure effective reach, especially in rural communities.

Also speaking, the Director of Veterinary Services, Adedamola Fasoranti, assured farmers of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines. He stressed that timely vaccination remains one of the most reliable ways to prevent the spread of deadly livestock diseases.

Fasoranti called on cattle rearers and poultry farmers across the state to present their animals for vaccination, highlighting the exercise as crucial to improving animal health and strengthening food security.

The vaccination campaign is expected to span all 16 local government areas in Ekiti State, with the aim of reinforcing the livestock sector and preventing the spread of transboundary animal diseases.
