Outrage in Ikole as Youth Leader Demands Release of Arrested Peer
The Coordinating Youth President of Ikole Local Government Area, Comrade Alonge Kehinde Julius, has strongly condemned the arrest of several youths within the LGA, describing the action as an attempt to suppress the democratic rights of the people.
Speaking from his country home in Odooro Ekiti during an interaction with journalists, Alonge expressed deep concern over the development. Representing the collective voice of youth leaders across 25 communities, he revealed that the arrests took place in Odooro Ekiti and Oke Ijebu Agege following resistance to what he described as the forceful imposition of a senatorial aspirant’s endorsement in Ward 3.
In his words, “We strongly condemn the arrest and detention of our brothers and sisters that occurred earlier today and demand their immediate and unconditional release.” He emphasized that the people of Ikole have a fundamental right to freely express their political opinions without fear, intimidation, or coercion.
Alonge reiterated that Ikole youths remain committed to peace, justice, and democratic fairness but warned that they would not remain passive if their rights continue to be violated. “The will of the people must always be respected,” he added.
He further noted that the agitation is rooted in longstanding concerns over marginalization. According to him, Ikole Local Government has yet to produce a Senator in the Ekiti North Senatorial District since Nigeria’s return to democratic governance in 1999—a situation that continues to generate discontent among residents.
Highlighting the composition of the district—Oye, Ikole, Ilejemeje, Ido/Osi, and Moba LGAs—he pointed out that the incumbent senator, Cyril Fasuyi, hails from Ido/Osi, which has now produced two senators, while Ikole remains unrepresented in the red chamber.
Comrade Alonge therefore called on the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, to urgently intervene and ensure the release of the detained youths.
“We appeal to Governor Oyebanji to use his good office to secure the release of our people. Their cause is just and should not be met with intimidation or harassment,” he concluded.
