HON. IDOWU AFUYE SUES SENATOR CYRIL FASUYI, OTHERS OVER ALLEGED DEFAMATION
Hon. Idowu Sunday Afuye has initiated legal action at the Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti against Senator Cyril Oluwole Fasuyi, the Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State, and Hon. Ajegbomogun Dayo over alleged defamation of character and violation of his fundamental human rights.
According to court documents, the suit, filed in the Ado-Ekiti Judicial Division, seeks the enforcement of Hon. Afuye’s fundamental rights to dignity of human person, personal liberty, fair hearing, freedom of expression, and freedom of movement as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), as well as relevant provisions of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The applicant is asking the court to determine whether the actions and statements allegedly made by the respondents amount to defamation and an infringement on his constitutionally guaranteed rights.
Hon. Afuye maintains that the allegations and circumstances surrounding the matter have damaged his reputation and subjected him to public ridicule, thereby necessitating legal redress.
The case, which has been filed as a Motion on Notice, is expected to test the boundaries of individual rights, public accountability, and the rule of law.
Observers note that the outcome of the case could have significant implications for political engagement and the protection of personal reputation within the public space.
Further proceedings are expected as the court begins hearing on the matter.
