A Covenant of Presence: Erelu Kemi Elebute-Halle Begins Listening Tour Across Oye/Ikole North

As I step onto the soil of Oye/Ikole North Federal Constituency I today, I do so not as a distant figure or a seasonal visitor, but as a daughter returning home with purpose. This ward tour is not an exercise in empty rhetoric or political spectacle. It is, rather, a solemn renewal of commitment a social contract built not on paper, but on trust, sincerity, and shared responsibility. I have not come to speak at you; I have come to sit with you, to listen, and to learn.

For too long, leadership has been defined by a widening gap between those elected and those they serve. That gap must close, and it begins now. My presence in your markets, farms, places of worship, and community squares is deliberate. Governance must start with seeing and understanding. I want to walk the roads that become impassable when the rains fall. I want to stand in the classrooms where children learn under leaking roofs. I want to witness firsthand the struggles in our health centres where mothers wait without adequate care. True solutions can only emerge from lived realities, not distant assumptions.

This tour is my pledge to identify your needs directly, not to speculate about them. No one understands Oye/Ikole North better than its own people. That is why I have left the comfort of Abuja to come and learn from you. Speak to me honestly. Tell me where development has stalled, where promises have failed, and where you have taken initiative in the absence of support. Your voices will not be diluted through intermediaries they will shape my conscience and guide my actions.

I do not claim to possess instant solutions, but I carry with me a deep sense of duty a commitment to confront and address your challenges with unwavering resolve. When I speak of advocating for clean water in Ayede, improved rural roads in Itaji, employment opportunities for our graduates in Oye, and fair market access for our farmers, I do so with the full weight of responsibility. My role is to stand firmly between you and neglect, and to persist until progress is achieved.

A meaningful social contract requires mutual commitment. My responsibility is to work tirelessly, to represent you with integrity, and to remain accountable. Your responsibility is to engage actively, to speak truthfully, and to hold me accountable when I return. Support must not be blind; it must be balanced with vigilance. This journey begins with a simple but powerful promise: I will show up.

I am aware of the skepticism that often surrounds political engagement the belief that leaders only appear when elections approach. I am here to challenge that notion. The struggles of our people are not seasonal. The woman who walks miles for water, the farmer losing produce due to poor roads, and the graduate struggling to find meaningful employment all face their realities daily. That is why I am here now not later.

From Oye to Imojo, from Ayede to Itaji, and from Isan to Ilafon, every ward matters. Each community represents a vital part of our collective story, and none will be overlooked. I am prepared to stay, to walk your paths, to sit with your families, and to understand your realities beyond surface-level interactions. Genuine presence is the foundation upon which effective policies are built.

To our elders, I extend respect and tradition. To our youth, I offer my attention and energy. To our women, I bring solidarity and recognition of your vital role in community development. To our traditional rulers, I offer honour and partnership, acknowledging that sustainable progress must respect and work alongside established institutions.

As I move from one ward to another, I will not carry away applause. Instead, I will leave with a clear and detailed understanding of your needs your priorities, your concerns, and your aspirations. These will become my mandate in Abuja, shaping my advocacy and guiding my actions. When I return, it will not be with excuses, but with updates, progress, and accountability. That is the essence of this agreement: I listen, I act, I report, and I return.

So receive me not as a figure of authority, but as a neighbour committed to service. Open your homes, share your concerns, and contribute your ideas. The transformation of Oye/Ikole North will not be the work of one individual it will be the result of a shared commitment between leadership and the people.

Today, we begin that journey together. I am here. I am listening. And I am ready to work.
