Ekiti APC and the Imperative of Internal Democracy Ahead of Governorship Election

As Ekiti State approaches another crucial political season, it has become increasingly important for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to strengthen its internal democratic processes in order to ensure unity, credibility, and electoral success in the forthcoming governorship election.

Recent experiences within the party, particularly in the selection of local government chairmanship and House of Assembly candidates through consensus arrangements, have raised significant concerns among party members and stakeholders. While consensus can sometimes serve as a tool for harmony, in this instance, it has largely failed to reflect the true will, aspirations, and interests of the grassroots and the broader electorate.

Democracy thrives on participation, inclusiveness, and the freedom of choice. In any democratic setting, party members must be given the opportunity to freely decide who represents them. The denial of such a process not only weakens confidence within the party but also risks alienating loyal supporters whose voices ought to matter in shaping the party’s future.

As the party prepares for the upcoming National Assembly primaries, there is a compelling need to adopt a more transparent and inclusive approach. Allowing free, fair, and credible primary elections will not only produce candidates with genuine grassroots support but also strengthen the legitimacy of the party’s eventual flag bearers. This, in turn, will position the APC more favorably for the governorship election.

It is also important to emphasize that the Electoral Act provides clear provisions for the conduct of primary elections. Adhering to these provisions is not just a legal obligation but a moral one that demonstrates commitment to democratic ideals. Any deviation from this principle, especially through imposed consensus arrangements, risks being perceived as undemocratic and counterproductive.

Furthermore, individuals who are truly committed to serving their people and who possess genuine intentions should not fear the test of a transparent primary election. Open competition provides an avenue to prove popularity, competence, and acceptance among party members. On the contrary, reliance on consensus arrangements in situations where it suppresses competition can be seen as a disservice to democracy.

In conclusion, for the APC in Ekiti State to maintain its strength, unity, and electoral advantage, it must prioritize internal democracy. Free and fair primaries are not just desirable—they are essential. By allowing the people to choose their representatives, the party will not only uphold democratic principles but also build a stronger foundation for victory in the forthcoming governorship election.
