Call for Internal Democracy: Ekiti APC Must Allow Free and Fair Primaries
As Ekiti State prepares for the next governorship election, it is imperative for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to uphold the core principles of democracy by allowing transparent, credible, and inclusive primary elections.
The recent consensus arrangements used in selecting local government chairmanship and House of Assembly candidates have raised serious concerns, as they did not adequately reflect the true will, interest, and aspirations of the masses. Democracy thrives on participation, and any process that limits the voice of the people risks weakening both trust and legitimacy within the party.
Looking ahead to the forthcoming National Assembly primaries, there is a strong need for the party leadership to embrace openness and fairness by conducting free and fair primaries. This approach will not only strengthen the internal structure of the party but also position it for greater success in the governorship election. A candidate that emerges through a credible and competitive process is more likely to enjoy widespread acceptance and support across all levels.
In every democratic setting, internal democracy remains the backbone of political credibility. Party members and the general electorate must be given the opportunity to choose those who will lead and represent them. The Electoral Act clearly provides for primary elections, and this legal framework should be respected and fully implemented in the interest of justice and fairness.
Furthermore, any aspirant with genuine intentions, capacity, and a true desire to serve the people should not fear the test of a primary election. Open competition allows the best candidates to emerge and ensures accountability to the people. On the other hand, over-reliance on consensus arrangements, especially when not genuinely inclusive, undermines democratic values and can be perceived as anti-democratic.
For the APC in Ekiti State to maintain its strength, unity, and credibility, it must prioritize inclusiveness, fairness, and transparency. The time to act is now—by allowing a level playing field where the voices of party members truly count.
Only through this can the party secure a stronger, more united front and ensure victory in the coming governorship election.
