Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan is a distinguished Nigerian legal scholar, academic leader, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). Born on April 25, 1967, in Ayetoro Gbede, Kogi State, he has built an illustrious career bridging law, academia, and national service.
Early Life and Education
Professor Amupitan’s educational foundation was laid at the University of Jos, where he obtained his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) in 1987, Master of Laws (LL.M) in 1993, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Law in 2007. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988 after attending the Nigerian Law School, Lagos.
Academic Career
Professor Amupitan joined the University of Jos in 1989 as an Assistant Lecturer and rose through the ranks to become a Professor of Law in 2008. He has held various academic positions, including:
– Dean of the Faculty of Law (2008-2014)
– Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors (2012-2014)
– Head of Public Law (2006-2008)
– Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) (2022-present)

On October 9, 2025, Professor Amupitan was appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by President Bola Tinubu, subject to Senate confirmation. His appointment has been widely welcomed, given his reputation for integrity, intellectual depth, and leadership experience.
Personal Life
Professor Amupitan is married with four children, and is known to be a devoted family man.
